More customers now ask AI tools for local recommendations. Instead of typing “plumber near me,” they ask Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity something like: “Who's a reliable plumber in Tampa who can come today?”
The answer usually names a handful of businesses. If yours isn't one of them, you're invisible in that conversation. The good news is that AI tools don't invent local recommendations. They summarize information from sources that already exist, and you can influence those sources.
How AI tools choose local businesses
Each platform works differently and changes often, but local recommendations generally draw on the same kinds of information:
| Source | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Business profiles | Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect provide structured facts: category, location, hours, services and ratings |
| Reviews | Ratings and review content show what you're known for and how customers feel |
| Your website | Service pages and FAQs explain what you do, where and for whom |
| Directories and citations | Consistent listings confirm your business details are accurate |
| Third-party mentions | News coverage, “best of” lists and community sites add credibility |
| Structured data | Schema markup describes your business in a machine-readable format |
The pattern is clear: businesses that are consistently described across trusted sources are easier for AI systems to recommend with confidence.
1. Make your core profiles complete and consistent
Start with the profiles AI tools rely on for local facts:
- Google Business Profile: complete categories, services, hours, attributes and description.
- Bing Places: often overlooked, but Bing data feeds Microsoft Copilot and other tools.
- Apple Business Connect: powers Apple Maps and Siri.
Your name, address, phone number, hours and services should match exactly across all of them and on your website. Inconsistent data creates uncertainty, and uncertain facts are less likely to be repeated.
2. Earn reviews that describe what you do
AI tools often summarize reviews to describe a business: “known for fast emergency service” or “patients mention gentle care for anxious kids.” You can't write reviews for customers, but you can make it easy for them to share specifics.
When you ask for a review, invite customers to mention the service they received and how it went. Over time, your reviews build a clear picture of your strengths. Our review management process is designed around this.
3. Publish clear, answer-ready content
AI systems favor content that answers questions directly. On your website:
- Give every core service its own page with a plain-language explanation of what it includes.
- Add FAQ sections that answer real customer questions in a sentence or two, then expand.
- State your service areas, hours, availability and pricing approach clearly.
- Include details that set you apart: certifications, warranties, emergency availability, languages spoken.
Write for people first. Content that's genuinely helpful to a customer is also easier for AI to understand and cite.
4. Add structured data to your website
Schema markup tells machines exactly who you are. At minimum, local businesses should implement:
Organizationor a specificLocalBusinesstype, such asDentist,PlumberorLegalServiceServicemarkup for core servicesFAQPagemarkup for genuine FAQ contentBreadcrumbListfor site structure
Validate your markup with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.
5. Build third-party credibility
AI answers frequently reference sources beyond your own website: local news, industry associations, “best of” roundups and community organizations. Earning these mentions overlaps heavily with local link building:
- Get listed in relevant associations and chambers of commerce.
- Sponsor or participate in community events that get covered locally.
- Share expertise with local journalists and publications.
- Make sure your listings on major industry directories are complete.
6. Test and monitor your visibility
AI answers vary by platform, location, wording and time, so measure regularly:
- Write down 10 to 20 questions customers might ask, like “best emergency dentist in Austin open on Saturday.”
- Ask them in Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
- Record which businesses are mentioned and what's said about them.
- Repeat monthly and track changes after each improvement.
What not to do
- Don't stuff keywords into your business name or reviews. It violates guidelines and can backfire.
- Don't create fake reviews or listings. Platforms keep getting better at detecting them.
- Don't publish thin, AI-generated pages for every city. Low-quality content hurts trust.
- Don't chase every new AI tool separately. Strong fundamentals work across all of them.
