How to Rank in the Google Map Pack (Complete Guide)

A practical guide to ranking in Google's local 3-pack: the three ranking factors, the profile settings that matter most and a 90-day action plan.

When someone searches for “dentist near me,” “roof repair” or “best tacos downtown,” Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any regular website result. That block is the Map Pack (also called the local 3-pack), and for most local businesses it's the most valuable real estate on the internet.

This guide explains how Google decides who gets those three spots and gives you a practical, step-by-step plan to earn one.

What is the Google Map Pack?

The Map Pack is the set of local business listings Google displays with a map for searches that have local intent. Each listing shows the business name, rating, review count, category, hours and quick actions like Call, Directions and Website.

It matters because it sits at the top of the page, especially on mobile, and because searchers can call you without ever visiting your website. For service businesses, a top-three position often means a steady stream of calls from people who need help right now.

How Google ranks local results

Google has publicly stated that local results are based mainly on three factors:

FactorWhat it meansWhat you control
RelevanceHow well your profile matches what the person searched forCategories, services, description, website content, reviews
DistanceHow far your business is from the searcher or the location in the searchService areas and location pages (you can't move your address)
ProminenceHow well-known and trusted your business isReviews, links, citations, mentions, overall web presence

You can't change distance much, so winning the Map Pack comes down to beating competitors on relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you have. Choose the most specific category that describes your core business: “Emergency Dental Service” or “Cosmetic Dentist” may fit better than just “Dentist,” and “Roofing Contractor” is better than “Contractor.”

To find the right one, search your main keyword and look at the categories used by the three businesses already in the Map Pack. Then add secondary categories only for services you genuinely provide. Extra, unrelated categories dilute relevance instead of helping.

Step 2: Complete every section of your profile

Incomplete profiles lose to complete ones. Work through each section of your Google Business Profile:

  • Business name: your real-world name only. Adding keywords or cities to the name violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  • Services: list every service you offer, with a short description for each.
  • Business description: explain what you do, who you serve and where, in plain language.
  • Hours and special hours: keep them accurate, including holidays.
  • Attributes: add every attribute that applies, such as online appointments or wheelchair accessibility.
  • Service areas: if you travel to customers, list the cities or regions you actually cover.
  • Booking or quote links: make it easy for searchers to act immediately.

Step 3: Make your business data consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your name, address and phone number (NAP) across the web. If your listing on Yelp shows an old address, or a directory shows a different phone number, Google's confidence in your business drops.

Run a citation audit, fix inconsistencies on the major directories and data aggregators, and remove duplicate listings. Then build accurate listings on the directories that matter in your country and industry.

Step 4: Build a reliable review engine

Reviews influence both rankings and conversions. Google looks at how many reviews you have, how recent they are and what they say. Customers look at the same things before they call.

The businesses that win don't get reviews by accident. They ask every satisfied customer, at the right moment, with a direct link. A simple system:

  1. Send a text or email with your review link shortly after the job or appointment.
  2. Follow up once if the customer doesn't respond.
  3. Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a day or two.

Never buy reviews, offer incentives or only ask customers you expect to be happy. Those practices violate Google's policies and, in the U.S., can also run afoul of FTC rules. See our guide to review management for more.

Step 5: Keep the profile active with photos and posts

Active profiles tend to perform better than dormant ones. Upload original photos regularly: your team, your storefront or vehicles, and real work. Publish Google posts with offers, project spotlights and updates.

Photos also improve conversion. A searcher comparing three plumbers is far more likely to call the one with real photos of real jobs than the one with a logo and nothing else.

Step 6: Strengthen your website's local relevance

Your website is a major relevance and prominence signal for your profile. Make sure it:

  • Has a dedicated page for each core service, not one page listing everything.
  • Clearly mentions the areas you serve, with local landing pages for your most important cities.
  • Shows your name, address and phone number exactly as they appear on your profile.
  • Uses LocalBusiness structured data (schema markup).
  • Loads fast on mobile and makes calling you a single tap.

Step 7: Earn local links and mentions

In competitive markets, many businesses have decent profiles and plenty of reviews. What separates position one from position four is often prominence built through links and mentions from local sources: news sites, chambers of commerce, sponsorships, suppliers and community organizations.

Focus on relevance over volume. A link from your city's business association is worth more than dozens of links from unrelated blogs. Our local link building service explains how to earn these safely.

Step 8: Track rankings and calls, not just traffic

Map Pack rankings vary by where the searcher is standing, so a single “rank” number is misleading. Use grid-based rank tracking to see your visibility across your service area, and track the metrics that matter to your business:

  • Calls from your Google Business Profile
  • Direction requests and website clicks
  • Calls and form submissions from your website
  • Rankings for your top keywords across your service area

Common mistakes that keep businesses out of the Map Pack

  • Keyword-stuffing the business name. It can work briefly, then gets reported or suspended.
  • Using a virtual office or mailbox as an address. This violates Google's guidelines.
  • Choosing a category that's too broad. Specific categories match specific searches.
  • Ignoring reviews for months. Review recency matters to Google and to customers.
  • Having one page for all services. Google can't tell what you're most relevant for.

A realistic 90-day plan

TimeframeFocus
Weeks 1–2Audit, fix categories, complete the profile, install call tracking
Weeks 3–4Clean citations, fix website NAP and schema, launch review requests
Weeks 5–8Build service and location pages, publish weekly posts and photos
Weeks 9–13Earn local links, expand keywords and areas, double down on what drives calls

Most businesses see meaningful movement within the first 30 to 60 days. Highly competitive categories in large cities take longer to reach the top three, which is why consistency matters more than any single tactic.
