Your Google Business Profile is often the first impression a customer has of your business, and it's one of the biggest factors in whether you show up on Google Maps at all. Yet most profiles we audit are only half finished.
Use this checklist to optimize every part of your profile. Work through it in order, and revisit it every quarter.
1. Ownership and verification
- You (the business owner) are the primary owner of the profile, not an agency or former employee.
- Agencies and staff have manager access, not ownership.
- The profile is verified and shows no warnings in your dashboard.
- There are no duplicate profiles for the same location. If there are, request removal or merging.
2. Core business information
- Business name matches your real-world signage and legal branding, with no added keywords or cities.
- Address is a real location where you serve customers or are staffed during business hours. No mailboxes or virtual offices.
- If you travel to customers, service areas list the cities or regions you actually serve.
- Phone number is a local number, identical to the one on your website and major directories.
- Website link points to the most relevant page, usually your homepage or a location page, tagged with UTM parameters so you can measure traffic in analytics.
- Regular hours are accurate, and special hours are set for holidays.
3. Categories
- Primary category is the most specific match for your core service.
- You checked the categories used by the top three competitors for your main keyword.
- Secondary categories cover other genuine services, with no unrelated extras.
4. Services and products
- Every service you offer is listed, including high-value ones customers search for directly.
- Each service has a short, clear description written for customers.
- Products (or service packages) are added with photos where relevant.
5. Business description
- Uses the available space to explain what you do, who you help and where.
- Mentions what makes you different: years in business, certifications, guarantees.
- Reads naturally, with no keyword stuffing, links or promotional gimmicks that violate guidelines.
6. Attributes and actions
- All relevant attributes are selected, such as online appointments, onsite services or accessibility features.
- Booking, appointment or quote links are added if you offer them.
- Opening date is set if you're a newer business.
7. Photos and videos
- A clear logo and a high-quality cover photo.
- Exterior photos that help customers recognize your location, if you have one.
- Interior and team photos that build trust.
- Real work photos: jobs, projects, treatments or dishes, depending on your industry.
- New photos uploaded at least monthly.
- Short videos where they add value, like a quick shop tour or a before-and-after.
Original photos taken at your business or on your jobs outperform stock images for both engagement and trust.
8. Google posts
- At least one post published every week.
- A mix of offers, updates, events and project or case highlights.
- Each post has a clear call to action, such as Call now or Book.
9. Reviews
- You have a direct review link and use it in texts, emails, invoices and receipts.
- Review requests go out automatically after each job or appointment.
- Every review gets a reply, ideally within 48 hours.
- Negative reviews get a calm, professional reply that offers to resolve the issue offline.
- You never offer incentives for reviews or ask only happy customers.

10. Consistency across the web
- Your name, address and phone number match exactly across your website, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and key directories.
- Old addresses and phone numbers have been updated or removed.
- Your website includes LocalBusiness schema with the same details.
A citation cleanup is the fastest way to fix inconsistencies at scale.
11. Tracking and reporting
- You review your profile's performance report monthly: calls, direction requests, website clicks and searches.
- Your website link uses UTM tags so Google Analytics attributes visits to your profile.
- You track calls from your website with call tracking.
- You monitor Map Pack rankings across your service area, not from a single point.
12. Protection and maintenance
- You check the profile regularly for suggested edits from users or Google and reject incorrect ones.
- You watch for spam competitors using fake names or addresses, and report them.
- Hours, services and photos are reviewed every quarter.
